HISTORY OF MAKING FIRE
The use of fire by Homo erectus began some 1,000,000 years ago. Flint blades burned in fires roughly 300,000 years ago were found near fossils of early modern Homo sapiens in Morocco. Tools were struck with the mineral pyrite to produce sparks around 50,000 years ago. Pyrite is a naturally occurring iron disulfide mineral. The name comes from the Greek word pyr, 'fire,' because pyrite emits sparks when struck by metal.
